update: april 20, 2009 - I had wayy too many problems with zotero so I found an even better and bestestest citation manager in the world - Mendeley! Here is my post inroducing my love and committment to Mendeley - I explain my fave features, why it will be around for a looong time and how it is better than zotero.
Now the only problem I can't figure out is how to use the PDF recognizer - it seems that with this beta version they are still trying to work out the kinks - no one has responded to me yet in Zotero support - I am hoping this will be fixed so that I don't have to rely on PDF manager Papers - which I love but ti's only for macs and it's not a portable app. But this won't stop me from living on zotero from now on!
In the previous post I wrote about how omniplan will hopefully solve all productivity problems in my life. Well here comes hopeful solution #2 - DROPBOX!
I FREAKING LOVE DROPBOX!!!!!!
dropbox has now changed my mobi-fobi mobile la-la-la-life. It's a free online file storage system that just acts like another folder on your computer so it can be your virtual back up for your most important files without having to do a intense "backup." Cuz I'm always working on papers and I can't always work in google documents.
And now I'm not stuck to carrying my USB drive everywhere (although I still do cuz i'm paranoid like that). I switch between a pc and mac and also friend's computers. I have been trying to figure 1.) what is the safest and easiest way to access my important files and 2.) how can I share files with others?
well dropbox is the new answer because:
1.) your files are stored online so if you aren't with your computer or usb drive it's ok!
2.) it saves a copy of every VERSION of your file - so you can always access that older version with important changes that you thought that you had deleted
3.) it allows you to share a URL of the file so that someone else can download it! see in the picture I've circled in yellow this nifty trick - so if you have a big powerpoint to send to someone you just drop it in your dropbox public folder and you share it public url with them - so they click on it and download it! this has been great for getting my powerpoint to conference presentations.
4.) it's not blocked in china
5.) it works with PC's and MAC's
here's a pic of how it looks on my laptop = see how it appears just as another folder on your laptop!
try it out through my referral - I get extra storage space for you trying it ou and you get a whole new way to manage your life!
This is the ultimate sign of procrastination and you MUST participate in it! I took a test to be an officer for the Swedish army. But they don't want me. I scored below average. I can't lead an overseas platoon in an environment with many cultural differences with agitated locals. Now you must find out IF YOU belong in the Swedish Army!
Ummm I blame kenyatta for this 10 min diversion. But I must admit that the hopes of possibly testing high enough to be recruited by the Swedish Army actually made me excited that I might have an uncontestably great reason for leaving grad school! Damn it Sweden - why don't you want me!
hello everyone, I wish you a merry holidays, all 4 Tricia Wang Elves wish you a wonderful holiday! Please watch all 4 of me here. this is a corporate online viral "thing" by Office Max- but I love it!
Office Max you've been going downhill in my eyes for a long time - staples has been kicking your ass. Staples are everywhere now and I can never find an Office Max - but this definitely ups your cool factor - now you just have to build more stores!
This has to be the coolest thing that's happened to me all month. I must say, this has been one of the roughest few months I've had a in a while. And the night Emilia sent me this, I just started laughing and for a moment it made me forget about how sad and stressed I was. then 2 nights ago, I called Raquel wanting to talk and SHE also most a HAPPY ELF!! watch her elves here. We talked for a while, and RAquel said that whoever came up with this at Office Max deserve a raise! hell yes!
So make your happy elves and put them up on vox! - it will put a smile on my face.
Here are screen shots from the wonderful elf experience:

it was only today - Day #4 of the San Diego fires - did my friends on the East Coast start calling me to make sure I was not on fire and that my house was not burning down. This map demonstrates how truly catastrophic this 1 fire (of 8 other large fires) is- not because it shows how big this 1 fire is is, but because it shows how it compares to the city of Manhattan. Oh my NYC-Centric friends - the world doesn't make sense unless it is put into the context of your world? (I am not being 100% sarcastic, I am one of those NYC-centric people)
The stupid media has only been focusing on LA's celebrities up until today - and then they realized - wow the Malibu fire is sooo miniscule compared to the fact that the ENTIRE COUNTY OF SAN DIEGO IS BURNING DOWN!
Even my friend Roger in Sweden knew about San Diego's fires before my friends on the East Coast. That's horrible! He said the video he watched of the SD fires on Day #2, Monday - reported that the SD fires were worse than the LA fires. This is SWEDEN!!!!!! Can you believe that?
What's worse - I and many other bloggers in SD have been posting about what we are going through - so it's not like we've been silent. This clearly shows a need for more sophisticated and different levels of information reporting - if I and many others have been flickring and voxing about this for days and the large media conglomerates failed to pick up on the seriousness of this - it is clear something is wrong with how certain news is highlighted while some are ignored - and this also shows that we need a different outlet that focuses on first-hand accounts from bloggers and etc.
This happens all the time around the world - bloggers were posting about the recent Myamar/Burma killings of civilians - but it took a while for "official" news outlets to pick on it. This happens all the time in Africa and China. Just because people are writing about it online does not mean their information will get picked up. We need a new kind of media outlet that will be good at doing just that - specializing in first-hand online accounts. There is nothing democratic about the internet. hmm this sounds like just the kind of service Kenyatta has been talking about creating!
You can read my other thoughts about the distortion of wildfires here, emphasis of LA over SD here, and what a Sociologist would do during a fire here.

The execution of Troy Anthony Davis is set for tomorrow, July 17th. Send an e-mail to protest it, please blog about this or re-blog this post.
Amnesty International says that "Troy Davis was sentenced to death for the murder of Police Officer Mark Allen McPhail in Georgia. The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony which contained inconsistencies even at the time of the trial. Since then, all but two of the state's nine non-police witnesses from the trial have recanted their testimony. Many of these witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that they were pressured or coerced by police into testifying or signing statements against Troy Davis."
I understand the reality of stopping this will probably not materialize (which brings me back to when I angrily wrote about Stanley "Tookie" William's execution a few years ago) - but silence is worse - and even if his execution isn't stopped tomorrow, at least the Georgia state will see the intense the opposition is and *may* prompt them or some individuals to re-think the death-row policy.
Davis's case is especially apalling in the high error of its evidence (purported witnesses), and even members of Congress have written to Georgia's Board of Pardons. "Nobel-prize winner Rev. Desmond Tutu, singer Harry Belafonte, actor Mike Farrell, Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL), Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), Sister Helen Prejean, Sam D. Millsap, Jr. (former D.A. of Bexar County, TX), record producer and activist Russell Simmons and Murder Victims Families for Reconciliation are among those who have voiced support for clemency." (From Amnesty Intl)
So send an e-mail or fax to Georgia's Board of Pardons. Amnesty makes this very easy - you can do it all online here! it's very important that we write online about the issues that surround this unjust execution so that there is a digital presence of issues that are either ignored or mis-represented. I would like to think that if there was a more equal presence of blacks blogging, vlogging and just online in general - there would be more of a protest on the internet. Unfortunately, the inequalities we see offline are also mirrored online, so please please blog about this or re-blog this post.
