Carl you rock! Congrats to your awards, including the recent Best Documentary by London Independent Film Festival award! If you love poetry and youth and social justice - this is the documentary to watch.
ABOUT THE FILM: "2nd Verse” explores urban teen life in the San Francisco Bay Area through the rising popularity of poetry and Spoken Word. Although poetry is the unifying characteristic that brings these young people together, the film does not concentrate on their poems so much as it tells the story of their lives amid the Bay Area's melting pot of ethnic and economic backgrounds. We show how these teens coexist and draw strength from each other, and how these youth poets are changed by their engagement with spoken word, exploring their identity and connection to their unique California community. From a sixteen-year-old girl who lost her father to alcohol at a young age, to an undocumented teen struggling with poverty and his sexuality, to a privileged boy in San Francisco who attends one of the country’s most elite private schools, “Second Verse” endeavors to initiate the viewer into a world rarely seen or acknowledged by the general population."
"Spoken word in the Bay Area more than in any other place in the country is supported, is prolific, is dynamic, is political, and has more relevancy here than anywhere else in the country. I think that a large part of the catalyst for that is the amount of attention that young people are paying to themselves, to the lyricism in popular culture, in hip-hop culture and the way they are reacting to it. They are creating music but also expanding upon and creating a new form of lyricism, and I think it trickles up rather than trickling down. The youth get inspired by their mentors and by their educators but we in turn see the force with which young people are coming with their words and it just pushes the whole form forward." I am Tricia the Bear - GRrrrrrrrrrrrr.

this was bought at Rocketworld in San Francisco. thank you veronica belmont for introducing me to this! It was only after I went home to look at their online store, did I realize that they advertise it with a naked woman wearing this hoodie. it's just sorta weird - the whole ad is weird - reminds me of furry fetishes. they also did a bad photoshop job on erasing her pubic hair.
Well anyways - I LOVE my hoodie. it keeps me warm. And I love growling at people. I love all the extra pockets inside - plenty of space to put all the food I will steal from people. sometimes I am a lovable hugable bear - sometimes I am mean grrrrrrr. thank you kenyatta!
And GO BUY YOUR BEAR HOODIE TODAY!!! this a limited edition! Bears of the world unite!!!

at QUEEN’S NAILS ANNEX, San Francisco
Queen’s
Nails Annex is thrilled to announce that its August exhibition will
highlight new work by artists John Dwyer and Juan Luna-Avin. Both
artists will be mounting site-specific works for this dual-exhibition.
Juan Luna-Avin, originally from Mexico D.F., has built a reputation
for looking back into his Mexican heritage at the core of his work. His
inspiration for this exhibition stems from tributes to his favorite
musical movements that have transpired throughout time in all of Latin
America and Spain, most specifically his attachment to the legendary
Mexican metal rocker, Paco Gruexxo, who led various influential
underground rock tours for several decades in Mexico. For this
exhibition, Luna-Avin will be presenting wall drawings, paintings and
sculpture based on iconic rock music images and characters from his
upbringing in Mexico City during the 1980’s. The work is colorfully and
textually powerful, aiding viewers to understand his exploration with
various cults of personality in pop culture. He is titling his work
“Estamos Vivos!” translated as “We are Alive!” originally proclaimed
from Paco Gruexxo.
Ever since Meisha's mentor, Emilia, introduced me to her - I also fell in love with the Meisha magic. Since Emilia is my good friend - I had heard about Tymeisha for years. I remember I first met Tymeisha when she interned for a conference I organized at the Bronx Museum of Arts - she managed a crew of 10 other youths and never lost her cool with hundreds of people demanding information from her. Tymeisha, it's an honor that I also get to be your mentor - Emilia and I are sooo proud of you - we hope you are keeping the AMish in check ok!
The photos below are from my most recent shoot with Tymeisha at Cafe Grumpy - another amazing davidjacobs introduction for the most fabulous coffee that is just as good as San Francisco's Blue Bottle - but I still think cafe Grumpy makes the BEST ICE COFFEE EVER!!!!
Here are links to other shoots with Tymeisha - Black and White Shoot, Chinatown Shoot, Bronx Shoot.
